DegreeMatch.org - 2015 Awards - Best INFJ MatchBy DM Staff

September 2015

Are you warm, sensitive, soft-spoken, creative, opinionated and imaginative? These 30 colleges just might be the best match for you. In this article, we highlight 30 great colleges and universities for INFJ personality types.

INFJ Personality Types

Within the MBTI framework, the INFJ Personality is referred to as “the Advocate” and considered a Diplomat. These are individuals who are warm, sensitive, soft-spoken, creative, opinionated and imaginative. Among their greatest strengths are characteristics like insightfulness, inspiration, decisiveness, passion and altruism. This personality can lead to some less desirable traits such as being overly perfectionist, private, sensitive and they can “burn out” if they do not manage their stress properly. An INFJ loves to have a cause to fight for. They are most happy when they are working hard to help someone else.

Every Myers Briggs Personality type has its own list of career choices that may lead to high levels of job satisfaction. Not all INFJs will pursue work in these areas, but those who do will generally achieve the highest levels of success. Because the INFJ has such a strong need to help others, some of the most ideal career choices include holistic medicine, counseling, psychology, life coaching, spiritual guidance, writing, music and design. Having an outlet for self-expression and a way to help others is the best fit for the INFJ personality type. Additionally, the INFJ career is typically that of a leader, and not a subordinate.

In order to achieve high levels of success at the collegiate level, having the right kind of learning environment is critical. Because the INFJ is a sensitive person with high levels of altruism, finding a more intimate college environment is beneficial. INFJs benefit from small learning environments at schools offering programs in holistic medicine and healing, writing, counseling and psychology.

Methodology

This list highlights 30 small colleges that provide the kind of environment we deem well suited to the INFJ personality. Tuition information and accreditation information was gathered from the National Center for Educational Statistics College Navigator Tool. Enrollment, Student to Faculty Ratio data and campus setting data was collected from US News and World Report. In order to be considered for this ranking, the school must have an enrollment of less than 10,000 students. Additional data was gathered from school websites. The pool of possible schools began with over two hundred of the country’s highest-ranked programs well suited to INFJ. This data was gathered from US News and World Report in addition to other rankings of top programs in psychology and clinical psychology. Schools were ranked using the point system described below.

#8 – Marietta College – Marietta, Ohio

Marietta College Best Small Colleges for INFJPoints: 15
University Website

Marietta College is an excellent option for the INFJ personality type for several reasons. The first is the school’s commitment to philanthropic efforts. Philanthropy Day at Marietta brings together students and student organizations to collectively celebrate philanthropic involvement while also raising awareness of the benefits of community service. Since 1997 the college has supported contests, competitions, awards, and a host of other charitable efforts to raise money for scholarships, financial aid, and student organizations. One of the most notable is the Senior Challenge, where graduating seniors pledge gifts to their soon-to-be alma mater in order to provide future students with equal or better opportunities than the ones they had.

Another reason this college is a great INFJ school is the focus on stress management for students. The INFJ personality type is one that burns out quickly. The strong commitment to helping others can lead to a lack of focus on the self. The Dr. J. Michael Harding Center for Health and Wellness (CHW) offers supportive services to students who might need them. There is a diverse professional staff working from a variety of theoretical perspectives. Marietta College students come to the CHW for a range of reasons. Some are having academic difficulties, including time management issues, concentration problems, lack of motivation, or questions about study skills. Others are having trouble adjusting to college life or are having conflict with a roommate or their parents. Many students find that talking with a counselor, even one time, may be enough to resolve an immediate concern.

A third reason that Marietta is among the best colleges for INFJ learners is the strong Master of Arts in Psychology degree program. This program allows students to gain counseling skills and receive a strong graduate-level foundation in general psychology. Students will have the opportunity to complete advanced coursework in specialized areas of psychology such as clinical, cognitive, social, industrial/organizational or developmental psychology.
