30 Great Small Colleges for ISTJ Personality Types

If you are on a quest for the ideal college for the ISTJ personality type, then you probably know about the Myers Briggs Type Indicator Test (MBTI), one of the most readily used personality measures available today. There are a wide variety of applications for this test, including psychological evaluations, potential employee screenings, background checks and a variety of others. The Myers Briggs is a personality inventory grounded in the studies of highly respected psychologist Carl Jung. According to Jung’s theory, there are many nuances to behavior that underlie the way that people think, act and perceive the world. The MBTI uses a series of questions to determine your tendencies in four unique areas of measurement. These include:

Favorite world: Do you favor the outer world or your own inner world? This is called Extraversion (E) or Introversion (I).

Information: Do you prefer the basic information you take in or do you prefer to interpret and add meaning? This is called Sensing (S) or Intuition (N).

Decisions: When making decisions, do you look first at logic and consistency or at the people and special circumstances? This is called Thinking (T) or Feeling (F).

Structure: When encountering the outside world, do you prefer to have decisions made or stay open to new information and options? This is called Judging (J) or Perceiving (P).

These four measures then determine your Personality Type, which is expressed as a code with four letters. There are 16 personality types that make up the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator “type table,” each with its very unique set of characteristics, preferences and strengths. There are four groupings of personality types, labeled Analysts, Diplomats, Sentinels and Explorers.

ISTJ Personality Types

The ISTJ Personality is referred to as “The Logistician” and considered a Sentinel. These are people who are practical, fact-minded and extremely reliable. The ISTJ personality type is thought to be the most abundant personality, with approximately 13 percent of the population possessing this Myers Briggs Personality type. The ISTJ defining characteristics include integrity, logic, dedication and the need to gather information rather than make assumptions. Some of their best attributes include honesty, directness, a strong-will, high levels of responsibility, a calm demeanor, practicality, the ability to create and enforce order and the wide range of skills to be seen as a “jack-of-all-trades.” Some of the few weaknesses that correspond with the ISTJ personality type are stubbornness, insensitivity, tendency towards being judgmental, possibility of acting overly “by the books,” and a high level of self blame when things go wrong. This type of person is someone who appreciates order and tradition and being part of a family or organization with a rich tradition is a benefit. Some of the careers for ISTJ learners are military, lawyer, judge, law enforcement, detective, financial manager, business executive and engineering.

Best Majors for the ISTJ Personality

Each of the Myers Briggs Personality types has a number of career options that are best suited for their specific personality characteristics. ISTJs who choose to major in one of these ideal areas will have the highest levels of academic and job success and satisfaction. The ISTJ is practical and bases their decisions on information they can see and gather on their own. They are reliable and appreciate order, tradition and a sense of purpose. They are people who will gravitate towards enlistment in the military, often at a higher level of ranking order. They will also be drawn to careers in related fields such as criminology, criminal justice, political science and law. Their highly ordered mind also makes them excellent engineering students.

Qualities of the Best Colleges for the ISTJ Personality

Each of the Myers Briggs personalities will learn most effectively in an academic environment that utilizes their particular strengths and interests. Some personality types will benefit from a large university, full of extracurricular activities and clubs, while others will thrive in a smaller atmosphere. An ISTJ will benefit from a learning environment that stems from a historic and traditional background (such as those at older, more established schools). They will flourish at a college that has a strong sense of rules and order. They are not the type of student that will benefit from a highly social atmosphere. In order to be considered for this list, schools must have undergraduate enrollment rates of less than 10,000 students, which means students can benefit from a smaller and more intimate learning environment. ISTJs are often considered jack-of-all-trades, so a learning environment where they can try different things will be a huge benefit. This ranking list uses a number of factors to determine what the best schools are for ISTJ learners. Some of these include the oldest colleges in America (which will have the tradition they crave), best programs for military service men and women or veterans, as well as the nation’s best programs in engineering, political science, criminology and law.

Methodology

This list outlines 30 colleges that provide the kind of environment that will strongly suit the ISTJ personality. Tuition information and accreditation information was gathered from the National Center for Educational Statistics College Navigator Tool.  Enrollment data was collected from US News and World Report.  Data relevant to each school was gathered from the school’s website as listed. The pool of possible schools began with over two hundred of the country’s best nationally ranked programs for ISTJ majors. This data was gathered from US News and World Report as well as the lists of the top programs in Engineering, Criminology, Political Science and Law. The remaining schools were ranked with the following methodology:

The school is now a small liberal arts college in Chestertown, Maryland, offering students the benefit of small class sizes and over 40 bachelor’s degree options. Washington College students are in an ideal location to visit Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, each of which are approximately 90 minutes away. For ISTJ majors who have a true love of history and tradition, this location could not be any better. #21 – Virginia Military Academy – Lexington, Virginia

Included in this list are a number of military academies and colleges. This is due in part to the strong academics these schools offer, but also reflects the large number of ISTJ personality types who will feel called to serve their country in the armed forces. The Virginia Military Institute is the oldest state-supported military college in the nation. Students admitted to the college are known as military cadets and are required to participate in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC). Unlike federal service academies, Virginia Military Institute cadets do not have a mandate to serve in the military upon graduation (although many choose to do so). Cadets can choose from approximately 80 academic, professional and social clubs and organizations.

Freshmen admitted to VMI participate in an exercise known as the Rat Line, which is a system designed to promote equality among all cadets while also preparing them mentally and physically for their career in the Corps. This is accomplished through a series of team-building exercises and strict regulations. Students housing is “The Barracks,” where cadets live modestly, with limited space and multiple other occupants, where they are expected to maintain cleanliness and order at all times. The most popular majors at VMI include International Relations & Affairs, Civil Engineering, Economics, History, and Psychology.

VMI believes that “academic excellence is best maintained at a small college when the number of disciplines offering degrees is restricted.” The choice between a course of study culminating in a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree must be made before the cadet enters VMI, however transfer from one major field of study to another is permitted with some restrictions. The degree options are as follows:

• The Bachelor of Science degree can be earned with a major in applied mathematics, chemistry, civil engineering, computer information science, electrical and computer engineering, mechanical engineering, physics or psychology
