DegreeMatch.org - 2015 Awards - Best INTP MatchBy DM Staff
June 2015

This ranking highlights 30 great colleges for INTP personality types.

INTP Personality Types

Among the most rare of the 16 Myers-Briggs personality types is the INTP type. This is the Introversion, Intuition, Thinking and Perceiving Personality Type, often referred to as “The Logician.” INTP personalities make up approximately 3 percent of the entire population. An individual with this rare personality is likely quiet, stoic, unassertive and aloof. These are people with strong creativity and an inborn enthusiasm for new possibilities and theories. While they are rational, open-minded, honest and imaginative, they often are disorganized and lack social niceties. They are people will little regard for rules and guidelines, preferring instead to make their own.

For each Myers Briggs Personality type there is a list of career options best suited for that specific personality type. Their open mindedness, coupled with their other positive qualities make them ideal for careers in areas such as philosophy, law and psychology. They are people who love to delve deeper into ideas and are very enthusiastic about new challenges, making them ideal for careers in science, physics, systems analysis and business analytics. The highly imaginative part of their personality that is more creative means that a career in architecture is also an excellent fit.

Each Myers Briggs personality type has a learning environment that is ideally suited to their personality. The INTP personality does best in a less structured environment with the ability to work closely with faculty members and mentors. These are people who may lack some of the social niceties and nuances, so a smaller, more enclosed environment will help them stay in their comfort zone. They tend to gravitate towards STEM (science and technology majors) so schools offering more respected science and technology programs are a great fit. Because INTPs enjoy the opportunity to pursue their ideas, having access to labs and advanced research facilities is important.

Methodology

This list highlights 30 colleges that provide the kind of environment well suited to the INTP personality. These are schools that allow for more independent learning and have fewer rules and guidelines. Many of these schools are nationally recognized for their programs in computer science, technology, science, research, philosophy, law, architecture and business analysis, as these are programs an INTP would pursue. Many of these colleges are smaller schools with less focus on things like student interaction, fraternity and sororities and student clubs and activities. As INTPs like autonomy and independence, schools offering these kinds of learning environments are excellent choices for the INTP mind.

The pool of possible schools began with over two hundred of the country’s best nationally ranked programs in majors deemed a good match for INTP. This data was gathered from US News and World Report and from other rankings of top programs in philosophy, architecture and business analysis. The next step was to eliminate those schools that have a highly structured or restrictive environment, programs that are solely based in the Liberal Arts, have zealous requirements for social involvement and lack opportunities for research and new ideas. Schools were ranked using the point system described here.

Great Colleges for INTP Personality

Individuals who have the unique Myers-Briggs Personality of Introversion, Intuition, Thinking, and Perceiving are a unique and special group of thinkers. They are intelligent and creative and love to come up with novel ideas and theories to test and assert. While they are not highly social beings and lack some of the social graces that help most college students, their abstract, imaginative minds help them find their way through college successfully. This list focuses on the specific criteria that would be an ideal fit for the INTP personality. Some of these elements include smaller class sizes and enrollment, the ability to pursue a major that allows for creativity and free thinking, and the lack of highly rigid rules and guidelines. The INTP Personality is one of the most rare of all 16 types, which makes it critically important to find a college or university that can meet the unique needs of the INTP mind.
